Oasis Institute Spring Volunteer Celebration and Training Event

In honor of National Volunteer Week, on Friday, April 25, St. Louis Oasis is hosting its Spring Volunteer Celebration, an event to recognize and provide professional development to older adult volunteers who serve as Oasis tutors in school districts across Illinois and Missouri. The event will be held at the Callaway Electric Cooperative in Fulton, MO from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The event will kick off with a personal development session, ‘Design Your Life 50+’, led by the University of Central Missouri Career and Life Design staff. This interactive morning session will introduce the principles of design thinking and provide life design tools to help participants feel more engaged, explore their curiosities, and discuss next step strategies.

Following lunch, provided by Oasis Tutoring, tutors will participate in a movement activity that offers a glimpse into an Oasis class experience. Tutors will also be receiving practical take-home tips and strategies for working with students who may have difficulty staying engaged or participating fully during sessions.

“The Spring Volunteer Celebration is not only an opportunity to enrich the work of our volunteers but also a chance to thank them for the service they provide in their communities,” said Mandy Plybon, Senior Program Manager for Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring. “Oasis is proud to celebrate not only our dedicated volunteers, but the millions of Americans who have chosen to serve their country through volunteering with AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors. We encourage others to follow in their footsteps and make a lasting impact through volunteerism.”

This event is made possible by funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Oasis currently holds the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP grant in Missouri for Audrain, Callaway, Franklin, Jefferson, Linn, Livingston, St. Charles County, St. Louis City, and St. Louis County as well as St. Clair County, Illinois. Over 2,000 active tutors are currently serving in Missouri school districts, providing over 50,000 hours of service each school year.
