Vaccines Aren’t Just for Kids: St. Louis Oasis Encourages Adults 50+ to Stay Up to Date During National Immunization Awareness Month

ST. LOUIS, MO — Vaccination rates among older Americans are declining. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest National Health Interview Survey, released in January 2026, just 67.1% of adults age 65 and older received a flu vaccine in 2024, down 3.4% from 2019. Pneumonia vaccination rates also declined during that period. As immune systems naturally weaken with age, these trends leave more older adults vulnerable to serious illnesses such as influenza, pneumonia, COVID-19, and RSV.

This August during National Immunization Awareness Month, St. Louis Oasis, part of BJC’s Health Improvement sector, is encouraging adults 50 and older not to overlook one of the simplest ways to support healthy aging: staying up to date on recommended vaccines. Immunizations remain one of the safest, most effective, and cost-effective ways older adults can protect their health and independence.

“Oasis has long championed a whole-person approach to healthy aging, offering classes and programs that help older adults stay active, engaged, and socially connected. We are proud to provide and promote resources that empower our community to live well at every age,” said Juliet Simone, Oasis Chief Programs Officer. “Keeping up with recommended immunizations is an important step people can take to protect their health and continue enjoying the activities they love, especially as we approach respiratory illness season.”

Depending on their age, health conditions, and vaccination history, adults 50 and older may be eligible for vaccines that help protect against influenza, COVID-19, RSV, shingles, pneumococcal disease, and tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap). Oasis encourages older adults to talk with their healthcare provider about which immunizations are right for them.

Preventive care is just one part of healthy aging. Throughout the year, St. Louis Oasis offers classes and programs focused on nutrition, chronic condition management, falls prevention, exercise, brain health, and lifelong learning opportunities. Learn more at stloasis.org/class.
