We are proud to share that Oasis has been published in The Oxford Handbook of Intergenerational Connections (Oxford University Press)!

Our chapter, "Changing Lives through Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring," celebrates more than 35 years of impact from the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program — a national initiative that improves children's literacy while enriching the lives of older adults.

About the Program

Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring has grown into the largest volunteer program of the Oasis Institute. The program pairs older adult volunteers with children, K-3, who benefit from one-on-one reading support. These sessions are about more than improving literacy; they also provide students with consistent mentorship and caring role models, while giving volunteers meaningful opportunities to contribute to their communities.

About Our Chapter

The chapter explores:

  • How Oasis Tutoring has strengthened schools and supported children across generations for more than three decades.
  • The ways older adults gain purpose and connection through service.
  • Insights from data and stakeholder experiences that demonstrate the program's long-lasting relevance and success.
  • The challenges and opportunities involved in sustaining and expanding this vital work.

This publication and recognition would not have been possible without the leadership and dedication of our Oasis authors:

  • Jeanne Foster, Former National Intergenerational Tutoring Program Director
  • Mary Click, National Intergenerational Tutoring Program Director – Fidelity and Expansion
  • Stephanie McCreary, Chief Purpose Officer
  • Paul Weiss, PhD, President

Their insight and commitment brought this story — and the impact of Oasis — to the world stage.

Looking Ahead

As Oasis continues to expand the Intergenerational Tutoring Program, this recognition affirms what our volunteers, students, and school partners already know: literacy support and intergenerational connection positively impact lives.
