Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Recognized as a Program of Distinction
February 13, 2025
Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring has been awarded a Program of Distinction designation from Generations United. This esteemed award is presented annually to programs across the United States that exemplify exceptional innovation, leadership, and best practices in fostering connections between generations. These qualities enhance opportunities for program sustainability and success in achieving desired outcomes. Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring is one of only 57 programs named a Program of Distinction in 2025.
Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring is the largest older adult tutoring program in the United States, with more than 4,000 volunteers serving as tutors since its inception. The program is designed to be flexible, allowing volunteers to engage in one-on-one sessions tailored to each student’s unique learning style and pace.
“For more than 35 years, Oasis has been providing the opportunity for older adults to support students and make the powerful connection between generations by sharing their time, talents, and stories,” said Mary Click, the National Tutoring Director at Oasis. “When a child and a tutor come together, something truly special takes place—not just academic growth, but confidence, curiosity, and a newfound excitement for learning. These moments are life-changing, both for the students and for the tutors who guide them.”
More than 525,000 school-aged children have benefited from tutoring sessions with Oasis volunteers. Using a six-step literacy approach developed by educators, tutors help students strengthen their reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills.
“We are grateful for our incredible tutors and school partners who are helping us make a real impact—one child, one tutor, and one heartwarming connection at a time,” Click shared. “The power of a mentoring relationship cannot be overstated—it’s what makes the Oasis tutoring program so unique and so vital.”
Oasis has previously received this award from Generations United.
