Bernadett Mattison’s journey with St. Louis Oasis began with Matter of Balance, a program designed to help older adults reduce their risk of falls and build confidence in movement. After facing serious health challenges—including a cancer diagnosis and extended hospital stays—she discovered St. Louis Oasis as a refreshing opportunity to focus on her wellbeing.

“I really liked the program,” she shared. “It showed me how to balance myself, take care of myself, and be careful. It was a very nice class, and I learned a lot.”

Despite her health struggles, Bernadett rarely missed a session. Week after week, she absorbed practical lessons while forming meaningful connections with fellow participants.

“The people were very nice,” she remarked. “It was a very friendly environment.”

Encouragement also came from her friend Yvette, who originally invited her to join Matter of Balance. Having a companion in class not only made the experience more enjoyable but also strengthened Bernadett’s commitment to keep attending.

When asked if she would recommend Matter of Balance to others, Bernadett didn’t hesitate: “I would recommend it to anybody that’s able to go. It’s very nice and it teaches you how to take care of yourself.”

Looking ahead, Bernadett hopes to continue exploring more St. Louis Oasis classes and events, with Yvette and the larger Oasis community by her side.

“The classes they provide for older adults are very nice programs, and I hope to attend as many as I can,” she said.

Today, Bernadett is also engaged in Oasis’ Give 5 program, which connects soon-to-be retirees and retirees with local volunteer opportunities that match their skills and passions.

Through Oasis, Bernadett has not only gained tools to stay safe and healthy but also found encouragement and connection. Her story is a powerful reminder of how connection and lifelong learning can enrich the aging journey.
