Dr. Daniel Schlafly is a distinguished scholar specializing in Russia and Eastern Europe. He earned his A.B. from Georgetown University, followed by an M.A., a Certificate from the Russian Institute, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. His academic journey is marked by international study, including a year in Germany on a DAAD scholarship and summer language studies in France and Poland. Proficient in Latin, German, French, Russian, Italian, Polish, and Spanish, Dr. Schlafly enriched his teaching career at Saint Louis University—where he taught the history of Russia and Eastern Europe among other subjects—until his retirement in 2021. His research and publications delve into the history of the Jesuits and the Catholic Church in Russia, as well as Russia’s complex relations with the West. Complementing his scholarly work, he has undertaken extensive travel and research throughout Russia and Western Europe and has delivered numerous community lectures.
